One person had to be extricated from their car after being struck by a train at a crossing just over a mile east of Valders on Wednesday. The collision happened just after 3:30 PM as reported to emergency dispatchers by an automated iPhone crash-detection 911 call that indicated that the operator was trapped inside.
Manitowoc County Deputies and several other responders arrived at the site on Lenz Road south of US Highway 151 where they located the Kia Telluride in the east ditch, facing northbound.
The preliminary investigation shows that the 76-year-old Valders woman driving the Kia southbound on Lenz Road failed to yield the right-of-way to the eastbound Canadian National Train at the crossing that’s controlled by a yield sign. She was extricated from the vehicle and transported by ThedaStar for medical care. Lenz Road was closed for over 2 hours and the incident remains under investigation.
Motorists were reminded to slow down, stay alert, and always yield to trains when approaching and crossing railroad tracks.
