Fire struck a box truck on I-41 in Fond du Lac County this morning, destroying the vehicle and damaging pavement in the process. A 911 call reporting the incident came in at 1:50 AM, sending responders to the northbound lanes of I-41 near mile marker 90 in the Town of Byron. The Sheriff’s responders were joined by the Brownsville and Lomira Fire Departments in handling the blaze.
Because of the fire’s severity the northbound lanes of I-41 were initially closed at State Highway 49 in Dodge County with traffic detoured between there and Fond du Lac County Highway B. The truck and its contents were considered a total loss, but no civilian or emergency personnel injuries were reported.
Once the fire was extinguished, responders discovered that chunks of molten metal had embedded into the road surface creating a traffic hazard. It took another four hours of work by highway repair crews before northbound I-41 could be reopened shortly before 6 AM.
