A camping trip in California by a Sheboygan family earlier this month turned tragic when the father collapsed and had to be airlifted from a remote area. After days of hospitalization, Tom Lentz was diagnosed with meningitis caused by West Nile virus.
Lentz was fully sedated and placed on a ventilator, and will most likely remain either hospitalized or in extended care in California for months or more. Even then, his chances of returning to Wisconsin remain unknown.
Meanwhile, Tom’s Sheboygan-based family is rotating in and out so as to be with him during his hospitalization. Funds needed to support Tom and his family will be substantial. Besides donations, the family welcomes prayers and sharing the situation.
A GoFundMe page has been launched with a goal of $16,000. As of Monday afternoon, over $7,500 had been donated, and the family updated with news that their goal is now to move Tom to a long-term care facility for continued recovery that could last from 3 months to a year before moving back to Wisconsin.
