Sheboygan Mayor Ryan Sorenson is encouraging city residents to give their input on the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s State Rail Plan which could restore more rail service to the city. The DOT is updating its 2023 State Rail Plan, with an expected completion date of the Summer of 2027. Wisconsin Rail Plan 2027 will set the state’s priorities for the passenger rail, commuter rail, freight rail, and rail crossing safety for the next 30 years. Sheboygan has not had passenger rail service since 1971.
In a Thursday afternoon release, Mayor Sorenson said that “Expanded passenger rail service could provide residents with additional transportaion options while strengthening the connections to neighboring communities and major destinations throughout the region.”, while also stating that “This is an opportunity for the people of Sheboygan to tell WisDOT why passenger rail matters to our community and why Sheboygan should be part of the conversation about Wisconsin’s transportation future.”
