Anyone who has been disconnected from public utilities due to missing payments is eligible for reconnection due to the extreme heat expected this week.
Wisconsin law prohibits a utility from disconnecting electrical service from occupied dwelling units when a heat advisory, heat warning, or heat emergency issued by the National Weather Service is in effect. Additionally, a utility is required to make reasonable attempts to reconnect service to an occupied dwelling that has been disconnected for nonpayment when an occupant states that there is a potential threat to health or life as a result of that disconnection. Once the emergency ends, though, disconnection is again possible.
Even those with uninterrupted access to utilities can help ease the burden on utilities and energy bills by following a few basic steps:
Keep blinds and curtains closed.
Unplug electronics like computers, televisions and radios when not in use.
Assure that the air conditioner is clean and maintained with clean air filters, intakes, radiators and such.
Wash clothes or dishes in early morning or late at night.
Turn off lights when leaving a room.
Those with questions concerning disconnections during the heat emergency should call the PSC at 1-800-225-7729.
