It’s been 55 years since the last passenger train rolled the rails out of Sheboygan. Efforts to restore that service have been quietly underway and this past Saturday Mayor Ryan Sorenson met with a regional representative from Amtrak to discuss returning active passenger rail service to the city.
A release from the mayor’s office on Tuesday said the meeting had built on previous discussions the Mayor held with Amtrak officials.
Mayor Sorenson said that, “Sheboygan is ideally positioned for passenger rail connectivity. Expanding rail service would provide significant benefits for residents, businesses, and tourism while strengthening regional mobility.”
He continued, “This project is going to be a long-term initiative that is going to require a lot of advocacy from businesses, community leaders, and residents if we are able to get this to the finish line. It will truly need to be a community effort.”
