With the proliferation of e-Bikes showing up on Wisconsin roads, questions are arising as to the rules of those roads where the e-Bikes are considered. The Calumet County Sheriff’s Office has put a list of rules on its facebook page, and nuances governing their use in Wisconsin abound.
Class 1 e-bikes allow pedal assist only, up to 20 mph.
Class 2 e-bikes have throttle and pedal assist, also up to 20 mph.
Class 3 e-bikes allow pedal assist only, up to 28 mph, and the rider must be age 16 or older.
All three classes must have functional pedals and a motor rated at 750 watts or less.
E-Bikes can be used on bike lanes, sidewalks, trails and public roads, which differs from electric dirt bikes and other off-highway e-motos which aren’t allowed on those paths.
Authorities advise learning those restrictions before heading out, and as with any such vehicle, wear a helmet and use lights and reflective gear when riding at night.
