Today is showtime at the Sheboygan Lakers Ice Center, as the Carden Circus is in town. Two shows are scheduled, at 4 and 7 PM with the gates opening an hour before each show. But there’s another event that will take place outside the arena.
Protesters from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, or PETA, plan to rally outside the center beginning at 3 PM to draw attention to what they call “Big-Top Cruelty” in the form of the many animal acts the circus conducts.
While PETA claims the animals suffer performing what they call “stupid tricks in front of rambunctious crowds”, Carden Circus leadership asserts that their animal care meets or exceeds federal standards, and maintains up-to-date veterinary records and possesses all necessary registrations and licenses required by the US Department of Agriculture.
