It’s the time of year when home gardeners get the itch to get the ground growing with plants and flowers. It’s also that time of year that has been the demise of many early-planting efforts as the risk of frost remains for another few weeks.
It’s not unusual to experience frost conditions – easily generated when temperatures reach 37 degrees or colder for several hours – until around Memorial Day. At least that’s what local lore would maintain. Tonight is no exception as a Frost Advisory will be in effect from 1 until 8 AM on Friday. Anyone who’s already committed their plants to the ground will need to cover them for safety, and those in pots and baskets should be brought inside, just in case.
For what it’s worth, the lowest temperature recorded in May at the Sheboygan County Airport was 25 degrees on May 3, 2004, while the last recorded temperature at or below freezing was 30 degrees on May 28, 2008. Tonight’s lows should rest in the mid 30s.
