I’m not old, but I ain’t young. And we’ve been killing time together on the B93 Morning show for the last 17 years*. And over those 17 years, we’ve talked about just about every kind of weather you can imagine. Heat warning, tornado warnings, blizzard warnings, wind chill advisories, Butt Cold advisories, gale warnings, etc.
But in all of those years of talking about the weather and playing Seinfeld clips, today was the first day we talked about weather so cold, that trees might explode.
Seems not great!
Now I don’t think a tree ‘exploding’ plays out in reality the way it plays out in my mind. I’m picturing some type of late 90’s Michael Bay movie (starring Nic Cage) where a tree spontaneously explodes like a stick of dynamite was inside of it (which would lead to an underground tunnel and a map to find the Declaration of Independence). It sounds like an ‘exploding tree’ is just that, a sound. Apparently when temperatures get as cold as they are about to in the Midwest, sap rapidly freezes and expands which leads to a ‘gunshot’ sound coming from a tree. Still, pretty wild.
So, if you live in these areas, make sure to take your Groots inside. If you’re cold, they’re cold.

PS: The only thing louder than trees exploding is the sound of old heads on Facebook cracking their knuckles as they get ready to hop into, ‘school cancelled because of cold weather,’ stories on Facebook Friday morning. They had it way worse and they’re ready to tell you about it!
