An unusual January rain event is expected in Wisconsin today that could cause localized ponding and minor flooding for low-lying areas and roadways.
Rainfall totals of between one-quarter and three-quarters of an inch are likely in southern Wisconsin, with Sheboygan County closer to that half-inch mark, mostly falling between 4 this afternoon and late Friday morning, and some thunder isn’t out-of-the-question tonight.
Ground temperatures remain near freezing, and so even with temperatures reaching into the 40s, rain isn’t likely to soak in but instead form areas of standing water.
Another concern is that of ice jams forming on rivers that could result in localized flooding. The Sheboygan River gauge at Esslingen Park was measuring three feet early today, with another three feet to go before any concerns arise.

NWS Graphic
More typical January weather is in store for the weekend with the chance for several inches of snow Friday night into Sunday morning, especially here in east-central Wisconsin. Right now there’s a potential for between 4 and 6 inches in Sheboygan County, however, with plenty of uncertainty remaining it will be a “keep up with the forecast” situation for now.
