Things We Don't Use Anymore Posted April 29, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

Today I was thinking to myself, what are some things that we as a modern culture have stopped using in the last decade or so?

Here's a short list.

And just in case it's been so long since you've seen these things that you forgot what they are, I've linked each with a Wikipedia article.

Paper Maps

Payphones

VCR

Phonebook

(to me only good for raising up my computer monitor)

Dial-Up Internet Service

Film Cameras

Landline Phone

I'm sure there is a lot of technology I missed so if you can think of any more, please feel free to leave it in the comments section.

Queensryche - Jet City Woman

Queensryches spent the last two nights camped out at North Lights Theatre in Milwaukee doing their Cabaret show with Go-Go dancers, a juggler, trapeze artist, contortionist and much more.  I really hope someone got a chance to see that cause I'd love to know what it was like.

Tool - Schism

From the latest reports it sounds like Tool has been in the studio working on new material but no word yet on when to expect their next album.  They do have two Canadian tour dates confirmed.

What Are You Sharing Posted April 28, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

What are you sharing on Facebook?  Well, a guy actually created a website to answer just that question.  The web address is www.itstrending.com and shows the top videos, games, photos and articles in a bunch of different categories like, news from CNN, Break.com videos, web games, Youtube videos and more.

So, if you don't think you're at your full Facebook potential, check out itstrending.com and see what everybody else is posting.  It's also good if you're experiencing one of those not so creative moments.  Maybe it'll be an idea starter.

Right now, as this blog is being written, the top CNN story is Toys banned in some California fast food restaurants.

The top video from Break.com is Team Celebrates Too Early and Loses.

Team Celebrates Too Early and Loses - Watch more Funny Videos

And the Addicting Game most people are playing on Facebook is Sushi Cat.

Have you shared those yet?

What's your favorite game on Facebook?

More Than A Mr. Microphone Posted April 25, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

When I was a kid back in the 80's I really wanted to be a radio DJ!  So much in fact that in my room I had a "fake" radio station set up.  One turntable and cassette player booming into what they called a "Mr. Microphone" which in turn you could pick up the audio from on any FM tuner.  At one point I actually boosted it's signal strength too!  (Shhhh, don't tell the FCC.)  I did it by splicing speaker wire onto it's antenna thus making it so the thing could broadcast all the way up my street.

If I was the same age I was back then now, holy crap would I'd be in hog heaven!  That's because anybody with just a little bit of know how and a couple pieces of basic technology can broadcast on the internet to a potential audience of MILLIONS.  You can either stream a live show or do what they call a podcast.

Now, I could talk forever on this particular subject, giving you step by step instructions on exactly how to do it but that's really not the subject of this blog.  The point I'm trying to make is how incredible the times are that we're living in.  I mean think about it, any average ordinary person can now become a radio or even television broadcaster just by going online.  Even easier, become a journalist or photographer by starting a blog!

Some argue that too many people have already done what I've just explained and that this "new media" has caused irreversible damage to "old school" traditional outlets, such as television networks, newspapers and the sector I'm in, radio.  I say, bring it on!  In the long run competition is good for business and will or has forced us to step up our game and become because of it.

So, if you're that 10 year old, in your bedroom dreaming of being the next radio/Internet star, the go for it!  Just consider yourself lucky that you have more than a "Mr. Microphone" to get you going.

Rock First Contact Posted April 22, 2010 by Dangerous Dave

The first time I saw the 1997 Science Fiction drama Contact starring Joe Foster and Matthew McConaughey, what grabbed me was the opening sequence.  It starts with a scene of the Earth, nice and close with a bunch of what at the time was current audio from radio and TV transmitting off it and into space.

Then the camera slowly starts to pull back and the farther it goes, the older the sounds get. Gradually less and less is heard until there is nothing but complete silence.  At that point in the galaxy you can't even see the earth anymore, not to mention are solar system or galaxy.

This got me thinking.  What humans have beamed out into the universe may be the first impressions we make on beings from other planets

So, my question is.  Of all the rock music ever recorded, what is the one song you would like first to be heard by that group of extraterrestrial visitors?  Which one do you think best reflects us as a species or do you think it should be a tune that kind of sets a certain tone?

I would love to read your responses in the comment section below.
