A Saturday evening crash of a vehicle filled with Sheboygan area teens proved fatal to one passenger, and multiple others were injured according to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office.
Preliminary investigation indicates that at around 7:15 PM Saturday, an SUV traveling westbound on Highway HH about 10 miles west of Kiel failed to negotiate a curve and left the roadway, striking a culvert and sending the vehicle airborne. It then collided with a utility pole and rolled over. While Fond du Lac and Calumet County Sheriff’s Deputies and the Calumet Fire Department were en route, responders were told that five to six occupants were involved, and additional resources were called in.
The driver, a 16-year-old female from Sheboygan and a 15-year-old passenger were taken by ambulance to St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac. A 16-year-old female passenger sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of family members.
A 15-year-old passenger was transported by helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee, while another 15-year-old passenger was transported by his parents to St. Nicholas Hospital in Sheboygan for medical evaluation. Another 14-year-old passenger was not injured and was released to a parent at the scene. As impairment appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, the driver was taken after medical treatment to the Fond du Lac County Jail on suspicion of Homicide by Intoxicated Use of a Motor Vehicle.
Highway HH was closed for around 5 hours for emergency response and evidence processing, and the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office continues its investigation into the incident.
