An early morning fire has taken the life of a Sheboygan man and their dog. The Sheboygan Fire Department Dispatch Center got the call of a structure fire on Pershing Avenue on Sheboygan’s north side minutes after midnight. A passerby had noticed smoke and heard alarms coming from the building, called 911, and initiated a full department response.
The first crews on the scene encountered a residential structure with moderate smoke showing from eaves and the area of the chimney. Firefighters broke into the residence and were met by heavy smoke banked down to the floor. They encountered multiple interior and exterior obstacles while operating on scene, but were still able to quickly control the fire, located in both the kitchen and a nearby stairway within minutes of arriving, but were not able to save the victims which were located during the operations. The deceased has not been identified, and cause of the fire remains under investigation. Officials stress the need for working smoke alarms that should be tested monthly, and batteries replaced at least once per year.
