Forecasters with the National Weather Service continue refining forecasts that can best advise the public on what to expect from the next winter storm. That system is expected to begin affecting the Sheboygan area this evening, and won’t likely abate until sometime later Monday.

NWS Graphic
The storm is expected to have three distinct periods of impact. The first, this evening through early Sunday morning, will mostly feature light ice accumulations and a few inches of snow for the Sheboygan County area. Next, light rain and freezing rain are likely to continue most of the daylight hours on Sunday, although little ice accumulation is expected overall.

NWS Graphic
The final phase has prompted a Winter Storm Watch beginning at 7 PM Sunday on the expectation of a few inches of snow and light ice accumulations, followed by a substantial snow event between then and 7 AM Monday. A Watch, rather than a Warning, was the result of uncertainty in the predicted outcomes, but preliminary estimates peg snowfall at between 3-7 inches in Sheboygan County, maybe heavier in the northwest, and lighter in the southeast corners of the county. Shifts in the storm track could still affect forecast accumulations.

NWS Graphic
Aside from concerns of snow accumulations, there’s also a window of wind gusts of 40-45 MPH on Monday morning with resulting blowing snow & reduced visibilities combining to approach blizzard conditions. Travel conditions could be very difficult as a result, affecting both the morning and evening commutes on Monday, and the combination of strong wind and heavy snow could down tree branches and cause power interruptions. Additionally, the wet and heavy snow will further hamper removal efforts.

NWS Graphic
As with any significant winter storm, changes are expected and the public is advised to keep up with forecasts as they’re updated.
