G’day Buzz-kateers! Well here we are again folks, another Super B… (shhhhh! Wanna get sued?) (sigh) “Super Big Annual Football Championship game”, and Green Bay… yeah… this seasons ending goes under the heading of “Wow… well that sucked!” (Huh… it’s easy to write this thing when I don’t have to change the intro)
Yup that’s right, here we are again. You’re probably wondering how we got here… BTW Year 15 of the season ending with Green Bay not winning… that’s becoming disconcerting, as this is now a longer gap than existed between Super Bowls 31 and 45.
In a vacuum, it was an OK season. Ending sucked, but not as badly as other years have. Love’s development and the offense’s overall “high” moments were pretty brilliant. The flip side: the “lows” for the offense… yowza. When it died off, that was just “death on a cracker”. The defense was excellent… until it wasn’t, and I think that’s really the story of the whole season. Things were good… until they weren’t. According to Sports Info Solutions, Green Bay finished 13th in the NFL in “most games missed to injury”, however not all injuries are equal in this league. The offensive line just NEVER seemed to get any “gel” to it, which isn’t a surprise as the Zach Tom on again/off again injury situation was an issue, and then Elgton Jenkins gets hurt, and it just felt like shuffling deck chairs every week, which aint a recipe for success. Tight End had the same problem. Same the D-line (and a lot was made of Parsons going down, and rightly so, however losing him alone wasn’t the issue. It was “lost Wyatt, lost Riley, lost Parsons, VanNess’s foot got hurt… and on down the line”). And ya ya “Next man up” league and all that, but at some point the “next man” was the next man and not the man for a reason, and it reflects on the field.
Far as the future: I think we might miss Hafley a little, but Gannon’s a solid DC and a good hire, and I really like some of the assistant hires he’s made.
I’m still confused as to why Bisaccia’s still special teams coordinator. I get he’s “well liked” and highly respected around the building, however… that doesn’t mean he right for THAT job. Find him something else to do, leave him as “assistant head coach” and hire an ACTUAL special teams coach for the job because CLEARLY what’s been going on isn’t working, and while that’s not all on Bisaccia (McManus… yeah… like I said up above: “he was fine… till he wasn’t”) he didn’t seem to help the situation any. Last kick return TD: Nixon vs Minnesota in 2023; last one before that: Cobb in 2011… last punt return TD: 2014… Overall Packers special teams ranked 20th this season, and that was only because Whelan was actually a pretty good punter (finished 4th in “net punting average”, 1st in “Gross punting average”). 32nd in punt return average, and the Packers were the only team without a kickoff return of longer than 40 yards or a punt return of longer than 20 yards. This is now 2 decades of special teams being somewhere between “meh?” and “hot garbage”, and it reared it’s head in the playoff game again. I said after that game “hey it’s good to know what my final words will be on my deathbed, and while “Packer special teams in the playoffs” isn’t nearly as eloquent as “rosebud” it’s at least accurate to what’s probably going to have killed me”. IDK if it’s the price for whatever deal was made with Satan to get Desmond Howard to lead us out of the wilderness in 1996, but I’m hoping that 20 years of things being abysmal in that phase of the game, would mean that debt has finally been paid off. Hoping.
Either way, in the end we’re in a good spot going forward… I think anyway. Love’s solid, ups and downs aside, I like our QB situation A LOT better than I’d say where the vast majority of teams are at, the WR’s are solid (just need 1 to step forward and become the “alpha”… Doubs I’m guessing…), I think (*THINK*) we can get one more year out of Jacobs (yards were down, but he was dinged up a bit and the o-line mess was responsible for a lot of that), and we’ll be back in the discussion next year.
Anywho here we sit facing another Sup… (sigh) “Super Big Annual Football Championship game” without a real reason to watch the game. However, fear not, Otto is here to save your Sunday… what’s the one thing people LOVE as much as football? PROPISITION GAMBLING!
So I present to you the annual PROPS POOL 2026!
Now regular “pick a number” and “pick a square” pools are all well and good, but (good time to point out BTW that for the remainder of this blog, when I speak of any “illegal” conduct, I’m of course speaking in hypotheticals… and that neither Midwest Communications nor any of it’s management or staff endorses or encourages gambling where it’s not legal to do so… we good? Cool!) however as far as gambling goes they’re kinda like slot machines. Random, almost totally unskilled, no real thought behind it, you wind up rooting for totally unrealistic and stupid things (“COOOMEEE OONNN SAFETY! I NEED THAT 4!”), and you also wind up trying to do math after you’ve been drinking all afternoon… bad times. Hence where the “Prop” game comes in.
Here’s how this works: print out as many copies as you have people coming over (just do like 3 extra… one as a master, and a few “Oops I spilled my beer” back ups), have each person toss in… ummmm…. *See the above disclaimer* (wink, wink, nudge, nudge…) , and have them go down the list, and circle their predicted answers to the questions (have them do it in pen… prevents cheating) , and whomever gets the most right gets the… ummm… *See the above disclaimer* honor and glory of being right (wink, wink, nudge, nudge…) . Gives everyone a reason to care, pay attention, and have still fun with the game.
Why so many questions? Prevents ties at larger parties. Use as many or as few of these as you like. Feel free to add your own questions if you like (Protip: just make sure it’s something you can track without getting TOO into following everything that it takes away from the enjoyment of the afternoon…) For those who don’t gamble: the reason anything with a number is presented as “X.5”, is to prevent there being a “Push” or tie with the questions. (Example: “JERSEY NUMBER OF PLAYER TO SCORE FIRST TOUCHDOWN- OVER 18.5 UNDER” If the numbers 18 or smaller Under wins, if the numbers 19 or higher Over wins, cool?)
