Land Purchase by Amazon from Documents Submitted to the City of Sheboygan
Although at this point it’s a “done deal”, the sale of land in Sheboygan’s SouthPointe Enterprise Campus to Amazon for building a logistics center is still a sore subject for many, some of them voicing their opinions before the Common Council approved the sale by a 7-3 vote Monday night.
Resident Peter Jacobs expressed shared his belief that Sheboygan had sold itself short in making the deal with the online retail giant. “We better act now, or Amazon will go someplace else. Let’s sell them land valued at $5.33 a square foot, for just .80 a square foot, and leave 12 million dollars on the table. Amazon’s developers are ready to pay 10. Sheboygan is prime and could easily get 12..”
Jacobs noted that Amazon would also get the 12 million dollars worth of development which has already been put into SouthPointe, as well as tax incentives… “Amazon is laughing all the way to the bank at our complete lack of finesse in the art of the deal”
Detractors weren’t able to convince enough Council members to vote “Nay”, resulting in the eventual approval to site the facility at the intersection of Stahl Road and Taylor Drive. Construction on the 200,000-square-foot facility is set to begin this summer.
