Mild air that pushed temperatures to 50 degrees overnight is about to be rudely removed by incoming cold and snow.
The thermometer at the Sheboygan County Airport reached 50 degrees a little before midnight, just shy of Thursday’s record high of 52 reached in 2003, and we remained in the upper 40s until temperatures began to fall rapidly around 4 AM. And after only picking up a third of an inch of rain, flooding isn’t a huge concern, but the potential for ice jams on rivers remains. But now wintery conditions are waiting in the wings.
Blustery winds will push temperatures into the 30s with any rain possibly mixing with snow this morning before ending. No accumulation is expected, and we may even see some sun this afternoon under diminishing winds. But possible freezing fog and light snow returns by Saturday morning with 1-3 inches of snow possible before ending Saturday night. Higher totals approaching 4 inches are possible in the Kettle Moraine.
Sunday morning should dawn blustery and cold, but at least we’ll expect clear skies much of the day even if temperatures remain below freezing.
