Lindee Brill, Republican Representative for the 27th Assembly District
A bill authored by two Republicans – Sheboygan Falls Assembly Representative Lindee Brill and Senator Steve Nass of Whitewater – was given a hearing on Thursday in Madison. The Assembly Committee on Judiciary considered Assembly Bill 311 which, if passed, would specifically prevent the alteration of a birth certificate to reflect a sex other than a person’s biological sex, and it generated both positive and negative feedback at the hearing. Witnesses included representatives of interest groups, medical professionals and members of the public.
Brill called AB 311 “basic, common-sense legislation to ensure that a birth certificate reflects reality, not ideology or feelings,” and pointed to testimony by some labeling a certificate’s sex designator as a “gender marker”, which she said reflects the “whims, vagaries, and fluidity of a person’s subjective experience”, and not scientific reality.
