There are no big weather systems capable of ruining New Year holiday plans appearing in forecaster’s eyes, as just a few light snowmakers will move through the area today and tomorrow.

The first round will be a widespread half, to one inch snowfall this afternoon into the early evening. The exception would be the Kettle Moraine where slightly higher amounts could build up since the topography might squeeze out a little extra moisture from the air. Whatever does fall should be done by 9 tonight. Another round is set for New Year’s Eve, lighter and more brief than today’s event, falling mainly between noon and 5 PM.

For anyone making their last-minute preparations, temperatures will stay close within the mid teens to around 20 now until Wednesday night when they begin a slide, reaching the single digits by midnight, while winds make it feel like it’s below zero.
And for those brave souls planning a Polar Bear plunge into Lake Michigan on New Year’s Day, single-digit temps and below zero wind chill will hold sway. And while that sounds cold, the water is actually a comparably mild 37 degrees, but still guaranteed to give a shocking start to 2026.
