The latest notable attempt to weasel money and information away from people by scammers comes from Ozaukee County where recipients are receiving an official-sounding message. And as official as it sounds, the complete message includes web links and phone numbers that it says should be used to fix any legal problems that result. But calling or clicking will only open the door to real trouble from thieves attempting to steal money or personal information.
As usual, the Sheriff said that such calls will never come from a legitimate agency and you should never follow through. If you’re in doubt, contact the County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency number directly. And if you were already trapped, report it to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
