The atmospheric ingredients required to generate a vigorous winter weather event are now coming together, creating a clearer of picture what to expect for forecasters charged with advising the public of the hazards. In the case of Sheboygan and northern Ozaukee Counties, it means a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from 9 a.m. Thursday until 12 Noon on Friday for a possible snowfall of between 5 and 9 inches. Snowfall is expected to be heavier to the north, where a Winter Storm Warning in Door, Kewaunee and Manitowoc Counties warns of 6-10 inch totals…maybe even up to a foot in areas most affected by additional moisture from Lake Michigan, especially on Friday morning.
That effect will also be in play here, with lesser snowfall between 4 and 6 inches west of the Kettle Moraine, where Fond du Lac and Washington Counties are under a Winter Weather Advisory for the 24 hours beginning at 6 a.m. Thursday.
As for timing, snow is expected to start here between 8 and 10 a.m. Thursday at rates of around a half inch an hour, and although there could be a midday lull, rates should pick up again late in the afternoon. Moderate south winds will become blustery from the north on Friday morning, gusting to 25 mph, and temperatures will likely stay at, or just below freezing for the duration. That could lead to a heavier, wet snow, leading to the advice to take it easy, break frequently and don’t overexert while cleaning up.
