With the futures of two century-old school buildings in the balance, the Sheboygan Area School District is planning public sessions and tours to ensure that voters are fully informed before approving or defeating funding plans for their renovations.
If you live within the Sheboygan Area School District, your November 5th ballot will ask whether or not the District should invest $121 million to rebuild and remodel Urban and Farnsworth Middle Schools on their current sites. Of primary concern are the issues of aging systems that have exceeded their life expectancy and must be replaced, and increasing safety and security both inside the schools, and outside where students get in and out of cars and buses. The classrooms in both buildings are also outdated by current standards and in need of expansion and improvement with more natural light incorporated for better learning. If approved, the owner of a $100,000 home could expect an additional $20 in annual property taxes.
Tours and info sessions take place at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 17th. Urban begins its session in the library, while for Farnsworth the meeting begins in the cafeteria, with presentations followed by questions-and-answers with representatives of the District and Bray Architects, and finally tours for anyone interested.
