Repeated periods of excessive rain have now taken a toll on regional waters, making it necessary to impose boating restrictions in the case of Winnebago County. The Sheriff’s Office there declared a flood emergency for specific waters, imposing a Slow-No-Wake rule within 500 feet of any permanent structure in eight specific zones, among them Lake Winnebago, Lake Butte des Morts, Lake Poygan and the entire Village of Winneconne.
High waters combined with boat wakes have threatened shoreline erosion, forcing the move that will remain in effect until water recedes to a non-threatening level. The Sheriff encouraged frequently checking the status as updates could change, and added that all local ordinances, DNR regulations and Coast Guard maritime rules remain unaffected.
