Despite scattered afternoon showers and approaching rains at dusk, Sheboygan’s Independence Day celebration was mostly smooth on Thursday, with large crowds lining downtown streets for the parade, filling city parks for events and picnics, and the sounds and smells of fireworks filling the air after dark. Not everything was without problems, though, as the Sheboygan Police Department reported numerous cases of underage drinking, one man burned at a pit fire at the close of the fireworks, and online reports of a large fight breaking out at DeLand Park. The SPD also reposted an account of an officer being surrounded and harassed by a group of five young people, one of whom struck an officer who kept their cool while breaking things up.
Rains were a larger problem elsewhere such as in Fond du Lac where weather forced postponement of that display, as well as in Kohler which proactively postponed their display out of caution. Both shows will now take place on Saturday instead.
