Nearly $2 million ($1,961,500) in federal money has been steered to a project to clean up a contaminated development site in the City of Manitowoc. The infusion of funds – $8.6 million in all – from the EPA’s Brownfields Multipurpose, Assessment, and Cleanup Grant Programs and Revolving Loan Fund Grant Programs are intended to help transform what were once polluted, vacant, and abandoned properties into community assets while spurring economic revitalization in five underserved Wisconsin communities.
The Community Development Authority of the City of Manitowoc will apply its funds to the cleanup of the Phase-1 Redevelopment area at 1512 Washington Street. That site was the home of the Henry Vits tannery in the late 1800’s. Vits converted his tannery to the manufacturing of aluminum products in 1898, and that continued until 1986, eventually contaminating the site with heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds and PCBs.
Besides the cleanup, Grant funds will also be used to develop a site-specific Community Involvement Plan and to conduct community engagement activities.
