I don't think I could love this story any more if I wanted to. Ladies and Germs, meet Audrey Prudence. Audrey was a nurse during World War II, and her husband, Jack, was a soldier. Apparently Jack was captured as a POW, was initially sent to a camp in Germany, but later ended up in Italy.
Now according to Prudence, Jack was treated well in Germany (at minimum you know they were on time for everything they had scheduled in a day), and very poorly in Italy. So upon his release, she agreed to boycott Italian food with him.
They did this for the duration of their marriage: 63 years. 63! 63 years with no lasagna, no spaghetti and meatballs, no pizza, no Olive Garden, nothing! That's commitment. That's a ride or die partner. If there's one thing I can appreciate in life it's a good grudge, and there's nothing more heartwarming than a couple grudging together*. I'm sure there were bumps in the road during a 63 year marriage, but a lifelong commitment to stick it to Mussolini had to be the tide that binded them together through the rough patches. If you can't find someone who hates the same things as you then what's the point, you know?
Sadly, her husband Jack passed away a few year back, so Audrey has slowly been incorporating more Italian dishes into her repertoire. The above video is her trying pizza for the first time. Absolutely WILD move to make the first pizza you try in seven decades a Hawaiian pizza but I guess I'm not in a position to judge. Props to Audrey on her nearly lifelong grudge. She's earned as much Italian food as she wants for the rest of her days.
*I wonder why I never got that internship writing anniversary cards for Hallmark?
PS: Don't think I didn't see this in the middle of the day:
Audrey you dog! Little 'za, a vintage 2019 Franzia, sounds like a nice little afternoon.
