So it would have been 80's/90's wrestling icon Ultimate Warrior's birthday today. And while continuing to give my target demographic of women 25-54 exactly what they want, I played his theme song on the air and reminisced about an obscure Brewer relief pitcher from 10 years ago. Nailed it!
Anyway, I don't think any Brewer fan can hear that theme and not remember it hitting when Todd Coffey sprinted in from the bullpen. Saying it was was majestic doesn't even do it justice. A ginger who was a Slim Jim away from 3 bills, running a 4.3 40 yard dash to get to the mound, only to surrender 4 earned runs in 2/3 of an inning and heading to the dugout. The Ken Macha Era was something to behold and I won't soon forget it, even though I want to.
Also: Ultimate Warrior might have been the perfect wrestling caricature of that time in wrasslin'. Roided out, tanned out, mullet, face paint, crazy interviews, he had it all! He also ruined my 1990. When Warrior and Hulk Hogan squared off at Skydome in Toronto for Wrestlemania VI, I was a YUGE Hulkamaniac. No chance the Hulkster loses on that stage on the biggest PPV of the year, I told myself. Well when the Ultimate Warrior pinned Hogan, and secured BOTH the Intercontinental and Heavyweight titles, I was gobsmacked. My youth and innocence died. In many ways, I never recovered.
Fun fact: It is also your boy's (me) birthday today! 36 years old with the maturity level of a 19 year old and the physical level of a 47 year old. Honestly I don't feel that much different than I did when I was 25. The biggest differences from then to now are that I have more hair on my shoulders than my head, and if I sleep in a weird position I can't move my neck for 3-5 days. Other than that, I feel great/mostly okay!
