The National Weather Service has included Sheboygan County in a second day of Red Flag Warnings. Those warnings cover much of the nation as unseasonably warm, dry air is propelled on brisk winds, raising the danger of wildfires that consume dry, overwintered grasses and plants. Fires like that can quickly grow out of control. One such fire near Necedah in Juneau County spread to some 100 acres of oak, jack pine and grass according to the DNR, which necessitated several evacuations on Wednesday.
Wildfires aren’t the only threat; a house fire in Milwaukee on Wednesday spread to two other structures on brisk winds, destroying them and forcing those families to find alternative housing.
The Red Flag Warning from the National Weather Service is in effect from 11 a.m. until 8 p.m. across all of southern Wisconsin today, cautioning people to either avoid burning or use extreme caution, and to be wary of fires started by sparks and outdoor equipment. Conditions are expected to improve by Friday.
