What could fairly be considered Sheboygan’s most-traveled intersection is apparently in trouble. The Department of Public Works has closed the intersection of 14th and Erie Avenue to one lane only in each direction, closing the left turn lanes for north, east, south and westbound traffic.
Superintendent of Streets and Sanitation Joel Kolste said that the Department of Public Works is investigating underground utility conditions and related pavement settlement concerns, and the lane closures are needed to protect “the interest of the traveling public and DPW maintenance crews safety.”
The intersection is the meeting, and origin point for three State Highways, 23, 28 and 42, and is a main route for commercial and vehicular traffic in Sheboygan. With delays in traffic anticipated, the DPW is urging drivers to avoid the intersection and utilize alternate routes if at all possible.
The closure was put in place at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, and so far no anticipated schedule has been announced as crews assess the situation.
