MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has released a draft proposal for a new wolf management plan.
The draft plan eliminates a statewide wolf population goal and recommends evaluating populations in six wolf hunting zones.
The wolf’s endangered status in the Upper Great Lakes region was restored by a federal judge in February, so the new plan would not be implemented unless those protections are removed.
The DNR’s existing plan dates to 1999 and sets a population goal of 350 animals. The most recent estimate put the number at 970 animals.
The public has 60 days to comment on the plan, which can be seen on the DNR website at dnr-dot-wi-dot-gov
