Sheboygan will celebrate Arbor Day on Monday with observations at the Willow Creek Preserve. The 143-acre preserve of woodland, wetland, grassland, and a 2-mile stretch of Willow Creek is just northwest of the intersection of Taylor Drive and Indiana Avenue and is owned by the Glacial Lakes Conservancy.
The observance begins at 9 a.m. on Monday with Sheboygan Mayor Sorenson and children from Pigeon River Elementary School on hand for opening ceremonies and a poetry reading at 9:30. After that, trees will be planted on the preserve until 4 p.m.
Those who wish to hike the preserve will be guided by GLC Volunteer Naturalist and former Maywood Director David Kuckuk at 11 a.m.
Besides the Willow Creek Preserve, the Glacial Lakes Conservancy protects over 2,000 acres of land on 28 easements spanning Sheboygan, Fond du Lac, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Calumet Counties. Willow Creek is the largest of those.
