Folks, I’ve come to a conclusion on the NFL salary cap: It’s not real. All of the whining and gnashing of teeth over, ‘how are we going to pay all of the players that we need?!?’ from Packer fans is wasted breath. The truth of the matter is that the NFL salary cap is infinite and eternal. It is time itself. It stretches on for miles and millennia with no end in site.
That’s the only way that I can explain how the Packers signed Preston to a massive extension yesterday, De’Vondre to a massive extension, Rodgers to an extension, and it sounds like they’re going to be able to work out Rasul Douglas as well. They have more time to figure Davante out because of the franchise tag and my assumption is that they’re going to figure it out based on what we’ve seen so far this offseason. Void years, cap hits, I don’t know, but Russ Ball is apparently some kind of financial wizard who can work the numbers.
The bottom line is this: This is about to be a full run back. Sure Tom Brady is back, but the Bucs are going to be a weaker team overall. The Packers will be the favorites in the NFC by a mile. That hasn’t mattered at all in the last two seasons because they’ve come up short when it mattered, but the band is about to be fully back together. Some Packer fans will roll their eyes at that and not enjoy the regular season because, ‘nothing matters until they win in the playoffs.’ Fair enough. I’m a simpleton so I’ll enjoy those September-December wins and convince myself that, ‘this is the year!’ For whatever gripes people may have about him on and off the field, Rodgers is back for the next 3 years which means the Packers are good for the next 3 years.
PS: Sidenote: I’ve never understood why fans of teams get so fired up about how much certain players are making. What the hell do I care? It ain’t my money.
