Ohhhhhh Matt LaFleur, you are our special gentleman with perfectly manicured eyebrows, we’ll take you to foggy London Town!
So some pretty big news from the Packers this morning that doesn’t involve an Aaron Rodgers contract or Rodgers starting some kind of cleanse where he removes each individual organ and detoxifies them one at a time. The Green Bay Packers are headed to London in 2022!
They are the last team in the league that hadn’t made the trip, so it made sense that they would eventually. I think the hesitation has always been two-fold: 1) They don’t want to rob the home fan base of a game at Lambeau when every game is sold out and the waiting list to get season tickets is a mile long, and, 2) They didn’t want to rob an away team of a Packer game because those teams are virtually guaranteed a sell out due to Packer fans traveling so well.
Well now that the NFL has gone to a 17 game schedule, every other season the Packers will have 9 home games and 8 away games. So the NFL decided to take that extra home game next season and send the Packers across the pond. They’ll be playing at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, no date has been set as of yet, but it feels pretty likely to me that this will be the home game they would have played against the Jets.
Related: It feels like I have to go to this game? I’ve never been to London and it’s certainly a place I’d like to see. And it feels very American to wait to visit one of the great cities in the world until my football team plays a game there. I could spend the whole week smashing crumpets during high tea, checking out a bunch of WWII landmarks, visiting some of the oldest pubs in the world and not brushing my teeth for days at a time to truly assimilate to the culture.
And if I don’t actually go to this game: Please let this game be the 9am game on whatever Sunday it lands on. I LOVE that game. It took the NFL years to figure out that they should just play the London game at 3pm local time and let everyone stateside wake up with an early game to pair with some Sunday Irish Coffee. It’s a delight.
PS: Everyone and their mother overanalyzing this photo from the Packer Twitter page:
NO RODGERS OR DAVANTE IN THIS PICTURE THEY’RE AS GOOD AS GONE!
Double PS: I bet I’m the only DJ in Wisconsin that played this talking about this story this morning:
