While fall colors are attention-grabbers, the Wisconsin DOT wants drivers’ attention on another outdoor wonder – whitetail deer.
It’s high season for vehicle crashes involving deer in Wisconsin as they experience what’s known as the “fall rut” of the mating season, and Sheboygan is among the top-10 counties in such incidents. With 763 crashes recorded in 2024, this is the 5th-highest county. Neighboring Fond du Lac County is a close 6th with 683, while Manitowoc County is number-8 with 645 crashes last year. Waukesha County was tops with 937.
While hitting a deer is never good, it’s especially bad for motorcyclist who face a 37% chance of suffering a serious, or even fatal injury.
The Wisconsin DOT advises to drive at a safe speed and carefully scan the road ahead. If you see one deer, expect more, especially during the early morning and evening.
Officials say that if you do hit a deer, call local law enforcement and get your vehicle safely off the road as soon as possible. If anyone is hurt or the deer is in the roadway, call 911, and never try to move an injured deer.
