Millions of birds are migrating to the south through Wisconsin, and especially high numbers are expected in the skies tonight. And that’s why a “Lights Out” alert has been issued for nearly all of Wisconsin tonight.
According to Lights Out Wisconsin and associated organizations, most birds migrate at night and are attracted to lights, many coming to an early end when they collide with windows and other objects. Studies show that window collisions are one major reason why 30%, or nearly 3 billion North American birds have vanished since 1970.
Purdue University’s AeroEco Lab figures that some 18.7 million birds will traverse our state tonight, many of those over southeastern Wisconsin. In order to minimize deaths, people are being asked to turn off non-essential lights whenever they’re not needed, but especially tonight.
