A DNR forester from Plymouth who lost his life while on the job will be honored tomorrow by orders of Governor Tony Evers. The Governor has ordered that Wisconsin and US Flags are to be flown at half-staff in honor of Adam Zirbel from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, October 4th. Zirbel, the senior forester at Kettle Moraine State Forest’s Northern Unit, was working on paths near Kewaskum when he was struck by lightning on September 22nd.
In his announcement, Evers noted that Adam Zirbel was a hard worker and educator, responsible for helping to plant millions of trees on the Northern Unit and carefully managing their growth. An advocate for protecting and conserving Wisconsin’s natural resources, Zirbel was a member of various state incident management teams, responding to significant weather events such as large wildfires, floods, windstorms and tornadoes. He also taught many DNR courses throughout his tenure with the agency and was instrumental in the development of many aspiring foresters, taking them on as part-time employees and providing them the mentorship, skills, and knowledge needed to be successful.
Services for DNR Forester Zirbel will be held tomorrow in DeForest and Middleton.
