A Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources employee from Plymouth died on the job on Monday when he was struck by lightning.
48-year-old Adam Zirbel was employed by the DNR as a forester and was working in the New Fane Trail area when he failed to return home. His vehicle was found in Fond du Lac County, and the search track was moving towards the Washington/Fond du Lac County line. Zirbel was eventually located deceased in a wooded area in the Town of Kewaskum at around 7:40PM Monday. The Washington County Medical Examiner’s Office along with the Sheriff’s Major Crimes Division, the Sheriff’s Office and the Wisconsin DNR, determined that Zirbel had been struck at around 10:15 AM Monday, causing his death.
According to a release from Sheriff Martin Schulteis, about 20 US residents die each year from lightning strikes. Schulteis called Zirbel a dedicated “…father, husband, community leader, and DNR forester.”, and said that we are better off thanks to his public service.
