Some apparently very-talented scam artists are again making calls in the region trying to convince people that they’re in trouble.
The latest, from the Winnebago County Sheriff, says that several residents, and even people in the courthouse, have received calls from an officer impersonator relating that the intended victim needs to pay a citation or warrant. In these latest occurrences, the fraudster even offers “meeting at the Sheriff’s office” in order to ease concerns. The victims are then prescribed what to do at the bank and how to deposit the funds.
The Sheriff said that this plan is very sophisticated, but at least six local residents were savvy enough to avoid falling into the trap and instead reported it to officials.
