The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging those enjoying Wisconsin waters this weekend to wear a life jacket. Thousands are expected on lakes and rivers now through Monday, and with crowded waterways, the DNR’s Major April Dombrowski said that it’s critical that everyone stays alert, wears a life jacket, and makes smart decisions to keep themselves and others safe.
Dombrowski also says that boaters need to stay sober, as alcohol use has been a leading factor in boating incidents. Boaters should be mindful of safe speeds, especially in congested areas, near shorelines and around smaller vessels to prevent capsizing or swamping.
Safety is a big concern of the DNR this weekend. So far in 2025, 12 boating fatalities have occurred, tragedies that the DNR says could have been avoided if a life jacket was worn.
