Those hoping to start the holiday weekend early with a dip into Lake Michigan today need to think carefully as a Beach Hazards Statement was issued for dangerous conditions by the National Weather Service.
The agency said that life-threatening waves of between 3 and 7 feet will be impacting beaches all the way from Manitowoc County to the Illinois shores. Beaches, piers and breakwalls most vulnerable to the waves are those with a north exposure. Dangerous currents can develop under these conditions, making it difficult for even strong swimmers to manage without help.
The advisory is in effect from noon today through Friday morning, and with water temperatures only in the mid-60s, Lake Michigan will be best enjoyed by staying dry for the time being.
