We may have endured a long, cool spring, but that cool weather might be a welcome wish by the time we get even halfway into the weekend. The National Weather Service is warning people to prepare for the hottest temperatures of the year so far, while humidities will turn it from simply hot to sweltering.
Tropical dew points are forecast to combine with temperatures in the low-mid 90s to create heat indices, or “feel-like” temperatures, between 100 and 105 degrees Saturday through Monday. If there is good news, those conditions come with breezy southwest winds that could buffer the heat, but at the same time they’ll likely keep the natural air conditioning of Lake Michigan confined to the shoreline only.
People are encouraged to find cooling options such as Lake Michigan beaches, public libraries and malls if you don’t have access to air conditioning, and to check on friends and relatives who don’t. They add that covering windows with drapes or shades can keep the sun from warming interiors during the day, while opening them at night might not do much to cool things as nighttime lows could drop no lower than 70 until late Tuesday night when showers and thunderstorms usher in cooler and more tolerable conditions.
