WALK-OFF GRAND SLAM pic.twitter.com/KHi9jfEN4H
Me when Yelich stepped into the batter’s box: “Please, for the love of God, just put one in the air. That’s it, that’s all I’m asking! Just put one in the air and let’s get out of here.”
Christian Yelich: “Even though you said mean things about me on your podcast a few week ago, I will hit one to the moon.”
I mean what a BOMB. Not only Yelich’s first walkoff home run in his career, not only the team’s first walkoff grand slam since Vogelbach in 2021, but he damn near forced the Brewers to giveaway a Toyota last night!
So is that going to be it? Is that the moment this team has been waiting for? They’ve been hovering around .500 most of the season, the starting rotation has been banged up since the first pitch of the first game of the year, the offense has been anemic for the better part of the first two months, it just sort of feels like they’ve been ‘wandering’ as a team. They haven’t had that same identity that they had last season. Maybe it’s the injuries, maybe it’s no Willy Adames to chop it up in the clubhouse, but the team has felt very ‘blah’ through the first two months.
But a hit like that? From your star player? To snatch back a win when it looked like they were going to be shutout for the 7th time already this season? Maybe that can galvanize them and bring them together.
And if not the Yelich bomb, maybe Pat Murphy waxing poetically about ‘dry humping’ in his postgame presser last night (about the 2:45 mark):

I’ve watched baseball my entire life, I’ve covered college baseball since 2012, I’ve been around managers and players for most of my broadcast career. That’s the first time I’ve heard the term ‘dry hump’ used as it relates to a relief pitcher getting up and down multiple times in a night. I mean it makes total sense, but I’ve just never heard it before. Last year the team rallied around Murph talking about being ‘undaunted,’ maybe this year ‘dry hump’ becomes the slogan. Get the Brewer marketing team on line one!
PS: If this team is within 2-3 games of a playoff spot in mid-July (or they occupy a spot), I am BEGGING Mark Attanasio to dig into his Malibu Sands account and trade for a bat on the left side of the infield. I think Durbin and Ortiz are playing better in the last few weeks, but the fact remains: Durbin is hitting .200 with a .578 OPS, and Ortiz is hitting .183 with a .499 OPS. There are a lot of holes in this lineup at present, but that one has no natural solution outside of making a move. Cooper Pratt and Brock Wilken are the future at short and 3rd base, but they’re still at LEAST a year away.
Double PS: As awesome as the grand slam was, Yeli’s double off of Aroldis Chapman to start the 9th inning was almost more improbable given Yeli’s numbers against lefties this season. How improbable? I told my wife before that at-bat that if Yelich got a hit I’d eat my sock. So now I’ve got to find a way to eat my sock.
