The future of the Sheboygan Biergarten at Kiwanis Park is in question, as negotiations on a new contract with the City have failed. The previous contract expired upon the new year.
The original operator posted on social media that the concept of duplicating the authentic German biergarten experience was a dream that, in the end, could not generate enough income to offset the investment, and had lost money each year. The operator said that efforts to arrive at a new agreement that would be considered โfair and equitableโ had failed, forcing it to abandon its May opening.
Sheboygan City Administrator Casey Bradley confirmed that the operator chose not to renew their contract, and that the City would be seeking a new vendor. One potential operator has put his name in the hat โ that would be local entrepreneur Asher Heimermann, who attended Tuesdayโs Public Works Committee meeting claiming to be the only one to have come forward at that time. He said that if chosen, he could anticipate an opening on either Memorial Day weekend or the first weekend in June.
City Administrator Bradley said that the process of selecting a new vendor will be done by the Department of Public Works and their oversight committee, since the biergarten is located in a City park. Final approval would be up to the Licensing and Public Safety Committee.
