This is a tough one, folks. It knocked me on my ass if I’m honest. I don’t get choked up on the air much, but reading this news and delivering it for the final break of the B93 morning show was a difficult one. A day all Brewer and Wisconsin sports fans hoped would never come. Losing Mr. Baseball. Heartbreaking.
It really feels like losing a family member. I never had the privilege of meeting Bob Uecker but we ALL felt like we knew him, listening to him and listening to his stories over 50 years of working on the Brewer Radio Network. Bob’s voice is the sound of spring and summer.
I think back to all of those terrible years the Brewers had when I was becoming a fan in the mid 90’s and early 2000’s, Bob was the reason to tune in every night! Sure the Brewers were going to get killed 11-2, and probably win 60 games in a given year, but Bob was going to tell you a funny story about his days as a scout, or he’d describe a situation comedy he had come up with starring Wile E. Coyote (true story). He found the perfect blend of authenticity, comedy, dry wit, and passion for the team he was covering. An almost impossible combination that he was able to conjure up effortlessly.
Add into his Brewer coverage the character Harry Doyle from the Major League franchise, Mr. Belvedere, working Wrestlemanias for WWF, his appearances on Carson, he was a true Renaissance Man who was genuinely loved by all. It seems impossible to fathom that when we turn the radio on this summer and listen to a Brewer game while grilling out some Usinger’s sausages (with crisp kraut) that we won’t hear his voice. A true end of an era. We are all so lucky to have been in his orbit during his time on this earth. RIP.
PS: I have so many Uecker calls that I love and listen to from time to time, but Nyjer Morgan NLDS walkoff is my favorite:
