The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is placing bans on baiting and feeding wild deer in Manitowoc, Calumet and Sheboygan Counties. That, after a 1-year-old buck harvested south of Valders tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease. It’s the first case of CWD found in Manitowoc County and was detected within 10 miles of the Manitowoc/Sheboygan County Border.
As a result, state-mandated bans on baiting and feeding will go into effect on February 1st in Manitowoc, Calumet and Sheboygan Counties.
The ban in Manitowoc County will be a new, three-year baiting and feeding ban, even though the county already has a longstanding local prohibition in place. Calumet County will renew a two-year ban already in place, while Sheboygan County, which currently has a three-year baiting and feeding ban in place, won’t be further affected by this new case.
CWD is a fatal, infectious nervous system disease that affects members of the deer family and was first detected in Wisconsin 23 years ago.
The DNR will hold a public information meeting to discuss the situation at 6 p.m. Tuesday, February 4th at the Woodland Dunes Nature Center in Two Rivers.
