Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause, and yes, Sheboygan, there is a White Christmas. Odds are against the stuff of dreams in this part of the continent, even as most consider Wisconsin part of the nation’s icebox. But the reality is that there had only been measurable snow on the ground four out of the past 10 years, the last time being two years ago. But 2024 has been an outlier weather-wise, and despite the trend for warmer-than-normal temperatures overall, a surge of snow and cold all lined up to make things “merry and bright” just in time, as the several inches of snow that fell recently resisted being melted and washed away.
If there was a downside to the conditions, it was the risk of freezing fog that materialized over the central part of the state overnight. There were a few reports of cars sliding off Sheboygan County roadways overnight, but the biggest problems were in Brown, Calumet, Fond du Lac and Dodge Counties and points west which had a dense fog advisory between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Christmas day for low visibility and slick spots from freezing fog.
The White Christmas will likely not linger, and just as dreams do, fade quickly with warming temperatures in the 40s and several days of rain setting the stage for a brown New Year.
