A recent close-call in Fond du Lac is serving to shine a light on resources available to those in crisis.
Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt related the recent intervention on a possible suicide attempt in order to illustrate the point that, although they’re ready to help in any emergency, those in crisis have options before putting themselves and others in a life-threatening situation.
The Fond du Lac Communications Center recently took a 2 a.m. call from a distraught teenager who said that she was on the roof of a downtown Fond du Lac parking ramp, preparing to jump. The dispatcher successfully kept the caller on the phone, offering positive messages and convincing her not to jump. Fond du Lac Police along with Fire and Rescue arrived to find the young woman in distress with one leg already over the edge. Officers were able to get to her in time, pulling her back off the ledge and ultimately reconnecting her with family and the resources needed to get her on a path to recovery.
Sheriff Waldschmidt emphasized that the County has a Crisis Intervention Hotline (920) 929-3535, while 911 is always available in emergencies where life is at risk. A nationwide 988 hotline is also dedicated to addressing suicide and crisis for anyone in need of help.
