I’ve actually wondered about this for a few years. Given how new the arena is, and how it sounds like the WNBA wants to add teams, almost feels like a no brainer.
Now the WNBA didn’t post great financial numbers this past season, even though they did generate RECORD TV ratings. The Caitlin Clark Effect. They averaged 1.19 million viewers on ESPN telecasts, and ratings in general were up 170%. This led to the player’s association opting out of its current collective bargaining agreement, which could lead to a lockout next season. Obviously a lockout would be a disaster for a league that is finally getting its footing, but I also understand the players wanting to strike while the iron is hot.
Anyway, the TV ratings, combined with attendance being up (48%), has led to expansion talk. And apparently the Bucks ownership group has submitted a proposal to the league. It sounds like 12-15 cities have done the same, and there is no timeline on when a city or team might be selected.
It does call back though to a time when there was professional women’s basketball in Milwaukee. From 1978-1980 the Milwaukee Does played in the WPBL, and were even coached by Larry Costello, who coached the Bucks during their title run in 1971. Check out the logo:
YO.
Anyway, I’m a basketball junkie so if we’re going to have more basketball at Fiserv Forum in the summer I’m all for it.
PS: Comment sections on this story: ‘GET A HOCKEY TEAM INSTEAD.’ Guys, we’d all love a hockey team. It’s not going to happen. Yes, we all know the Bradley Center was originally designed for hockey. Yes, there is a great culture for hockey in the state. It’s NEVER going to happen. Stop trying to make fetch happen.
