The Sheboygan Rotary Club’s Restoration Of Our Trees Sheboygan, or “ROOTS”, and its partner, the Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership, will initiate a unique collaboration with the Sheboygan area School District at Grant and Cooper Elementary Schools on Saturday.
The project will launch at 8 a.m., first at Grant where, following opening remarks, a demonstration of the techniques of tree planting from North High Biology Instructor David Miller will lead to the installation of about 30 trees at each school, with work done by student volunteers from both North and South Highs, along with Rotary Club and community members. The City of Sheboygan and private donors are also providing support through labor, equipment and material contributions.
Since its inception six years ago, ROOTS and its Lakeshore Natural Resource Partnership have acquired Federal and State grants of over $2 million to replace tree stock in Sheboygan, Plymouth, the Town of Sheboygan and more. The effort is unique to Sheboygan County and the Wisconsin’s Lake Michigan shore. ROOTS coordinator Tony Fessler is encouraging maximum support for the ongoing reforestation efforts from area corporations, businesses, service clubs, foundations and private donors. He called the campaign essential to the preservation of the tree canopy for present and future generations in the Sheboygan area, and encouraged more to get involved by visiting online at rootswi.org.
